Doris Ellen Delaney, had lovely singing voice

March 20, 2017

Doris Ellen Delaney, 78, most recently of Lewes, passed peacefully Thursday, March 16, 2017, after her battle with cancer. Doris was born Dec. 28, 1938, in New York City and grew up in Sunnyside, Queens, N.Y., with sisters June, Maureen and Patti, raised by stepdad Ed Brady and loving mother Kay (Ward).

She graduated LIC High School in 1956. Doris had a lovely singing voice and was a favorite local performer in Sunnyside, Woodside and Astoria, Queens. Astoria is where Doris and first husband Dominic DeBonis laid down their beautiful family roots on 46th Street and Ditmars Boulevard in St. Francis of Assisi Parish. Doris and Dom raised four loving children, Roger, Richard, Mary Ellen and Michelle, all four Catholic-schooled, and devoted to a wonderful mom. In June 1987 Dominic suddenly passed, leaving Doris at 48 a widow whose second chance at a new life was yet to unfold.

After a love at first sight meeting at Tavern on the Green in Central Park, Doris married retired NYPD Sgt. Brian Delaney in May 1991. They were married just under 26 years, lived for most of their time in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., moving to Lewes in 2010, and having great winters in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Doris was a lector and leader of song, beloved part of every parish she graced!

The rest, they say, is history. As a most devoted couple, a romance by any account, Brian and Doris Delaney joined families, with Brian's children, Billy (deceased), Dorothy and Timmy embracing Doris, and the DeBonis children doing the same for Brian!

Doris and Brian were proud and devoted grandparents to Ryan, Liam and Roisin DeBonis; Elish, Colleen and Shane Conlon; Michael, Dominic and Christina Matica; and their latest and adorable Haden James DeBonis; Matt and Dan Pinkston; Kate, Lauren and Jack Delaney. Rarely is love so beautifully and unconditionally honored. RIP with the Lord, Doris. It is accomplished!

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, March 21, at 11 a.m., at St. Edmond Catholic Church, 409 King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach, where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m.

Friends may also call from 2 to 4 p.m., and again from 7 to 9 p.m., Monday March 20, at Parsell Funeral Homes, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes. Rosary recitation will begin at 4 p.m.
