Edna Mae Miller, vibrant Lewes lady

May 1, 2018

Edna Mae Miller (nee Dunning), 93, of Lewes, passed away Thursday April 19, 2018. She was born in Lewes Dec. 19, 1924 to the late Dewey and Edna (nee Henry) Dunning.

Edna Mae was a forever native of Lewes and worked at the Sports Craft clothing manufacturing on Third Street in Lewes. Edna was an adventurous and raucous person. Edna Mae grew up on Fourth Street in Lewes, next to the Happy Day Club. She experienced the sounds of the Big Bands that traveled along that circuit, with Lewes being one of their stops.

She was known for telling it like it was! In her later years, she became a very spiritual person, and even though she could not get out or travel much, she loved listening to gospel music, and watching old TV dramas and western movies. Edna Mae enjoyed having people visit her home, and would sit for hours talking with them. Edna did not have children, but her nieces, nephews and friends’ children were considered like her own.

She was an outstanding cook and would cook an abundance of food to share with her family members. Her most famous specialty was chicken and dumplings. While she lived on Coleman Avenue in Lewes, she established a special friendship with Alfred and Frances Allen, who were her neighbors. Edna Mae was a very giving person who seldom asked for anything in return. She was very close to her siblings.
In addition to her parents, Edna Mae was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Herman Miller of Rehoboth; six sisters; Ruth Wolfe, Barbara Walker, Jean Lee, Julia Savage, Ella Carter and Elsie Wingo; and four brothers; Donald Dunning, Richard Wolfe, Burton Dunning, and William Dunning. She is survived by one sister, Joan Henry of Georgetown;, one sister-in-law, Margaret Dunning of Tampa, Fla.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Renaissance Health Care for the years of caring and loving service to Edna Mae. Carrying out Edna's wishes, there will be no formal service.
