Everyone should prepare to run with the bull June 24

Kids' Bull Run brings the party to the whole family
June 22, 2017

Red bandanas, white shirts and two men in a bull costume? This can only mean one thing: it's the annual Running of the Bull in Dewey Beach. The infamous bull is turning 21, Saturday, June 24, and he's ready to celebrate with an ice cold Bud Light, but before he does, he's going to have to have to warm up with the kiddos on the Dagsworthy Street Beach.

"Dewey is known for its nightlife, and vibrant community. This is a great way to extend that party spirit in a way that's fun for the whole family," said Steve "Monty" Montgomery, Starboard owner.

It was 21 years ago when Michael McDonnell founded the bull run at the Starboard Restaurant, he wasn't yet a husband or a father. As life evolved for the McDonnell and Montgomery, the two men put their thinking caps on and founded a different kind of bull run to entertain the smallest up and coming Dewey Beachers.

This year marks the Sixth Annual Kids' Bull Run in Dewey Beach—a rip-roaring, family friendly, good time where kids gather on the beach to be chased by The Starboard's own bull. Beginning at 10:30 a.m.. the smallest bull runners are treated to T-shirts and then music and dancing, lead by Kelly Ranieri. The bull then chases everyone down the beach, after which there are some good photo ops, piñata bashing, and a skim boarding bull provided by Alley Oop.

After the conclusion of the kids' run, it's time to call the best babysitters so adults can get in line to run with Dewey's party crowd. The stage will be set and from 12 to 4 p.m., it's the official Bull Run party and revelry. Around 2 p.m., the actual "run" takes place where the fabulous and ridiculously dressed crowd of imbibed participates will stumble, fumble and generally move in a forward motion as the bull chases them down the street, onto the beach and back to The Starboard where the matador awaits a fight to the "death."

It's one great day and two awesome events. For more information, go to www.therunningofthebull.com.
