Family-friendly Oktoberfest celebration set Oct. 6-7

St. John the Apostle Church in Milford will celebrate its 30th annual German Oktoberfest from 6 to 10 p.m., Friday, Oct. 6, and from noon to 10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 7, on the grounds of the church at 506 Seabury Ave., Milford.

Admission is free, and the entire event is cash only.

The Funsters will play all evening Friday. Also featured that night will be the 4th Annual Oktoberfest 5K Run/Walk. To sign up, go to bit.ly/STJOktoberfestrun.

The Oktoberfest international food court will be serving traditional German entrees along with Italian, Spanish, Polish and Irish offerings. Also available will be good old hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, Italian ice, funnel cake and homemade baked desserts. For the adults, the popular beer booth will be back. There is something for everyone’s taste.

Kids’ activities include an inflatable obstacle course, climbing wall, face painting, pumpkin painting, a petting zoo, hayrides, fire truck rides and little train rides.

Dave Betz and his German orchestra will entertain attendees Saturday afternoon along with the Enzian (German) dancers and the McAleer School of Irish Dancing. At 4 p.m., Sean O’Reilly will entertain in Frank Sinatra style, and the Glass Onion band will play from 6 to 10 p.m.

Oktoberfest is St. John’s and St. Bernadette’s (St. John’s mission church in Harrington) largest fundraiser of the year. There will be door prizes and raffles. St. John the Apostle/St. Bernadette is a multi-ethnic parish that has been providing for the spiritual needs of Catholics since 1910.  Today, the parish ministers to more than 1,400 families and provides outreach to those in need in the greater Milford/Harrington area.
