Proceeds benefit League of Women Voters of Sussex County
March 5, 2024

In partnership with the League of Women Voters of Sussex County, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present a special fundraising event, Defending Democracy: Then & Now, featuring four film documentary shorts at 6 p.m., Monday, March 18.

The film titles touch on the history of women’s efforts to gain and protect the right to vote in the U.S. From the role of iconic suffragists like Ida B. Wells and Inez Millholland, to the example of contemporary legislators choosing conscience over ideology to protect women’s reproductive rights, to the current battle against voter suppression, the event will enlighten and encourage patrons to treasure and exercise their voting rights.

The films to be screened are: “Suffrage in 60 Seconds: Ida B. Wells,” “Inez Milholland: Forward Into Light,” “Suppressed and Sabotaged: The Fight to Vote,” and “Deciding Vote.” The event will begin with an opening reception. Screenings start at 6:45 p.m., and a post-film panel discussion will follow.

Martha Rothenberg, LWVSCDE president, said, “This election year, we face unprecedented challenges to our democratic system. Regardless of their political outlook, all Sussex County voters must understand how precious – and fragile – our voting rights are. We hope understanding our history will encourage Sussex citizens to support the league’s commitment to making democracy work, and get out and vote.”

Ticket prices are $25 general admission, $20 for RBFS members and $5 for students. Student tickets may be purchased only at the theater.

To purchase tickets, go to rehobothfilm.com or visit the box office from 12 to 8 p.m., Wednesday to Friday.

Ticket sales will directly benefit the League of Women Voters of Sussex County, a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization. For 67 years, LWVSCDE has promoted political responsibility in Sussex County through informed and active participation in government. The league does not support or oppose any political party or any candidate. Membership is open to anyone 16 years of age or older who subscribes to the purpose and policies of the LWV of the United States. For more information, go to sussexlwv.org.
