Fortune teller predicts Sussex’s future

February 9, 2024

I never had time for fortune tellers. I always viewed them as charlatans. But my wife recently talked me into trying a fortune teller for fun, so we visited the Smyrna Seer upstate.

The seer had a crystal ball situated in the middle of her work table. "What is the purpose of your visit?" Madame Prunella inquired. Here goes, I thought. “I am curious about what our home will look like in 2050," I said. Miss Prunella peered intensely into her crystal ball, her eyes wide open but locked in a trance. After 15 minutes, she relaxed and addressed me. "By the year 2050, this area will have undergone many changes. Southeast Sussex County will become the metropolitan city of Sussex, Delaware, with a population of a quarter of a million people, the largest city in Delaware. Your home in Lewes will become a tattoo parlor with parking spaces for 12 cars.

“The Delaware Department of Transportation will complete the intersection and circle at Route 9 and Beaver Dam Road (Malfunction Junction). DelDOT further announces that it will start work on the New Road bridge over Canary Creek. Route 1, north and south lanes, from Milford to Dewey Beach will be under construction in four different locations and one lane each way, for 12 months. The average travel time through this section of highway will be four to six hours. DelDOT recommends travel by boat. Routes 9, 24 and 26 will be four-lane highways from Route 1 to Georgetown, Millsboro and points west.

“Tanger Outlets Bayside will be the site of a 100,000-square-foot gambling casino and resort, approved by the Sussex City Council and the planning & zoning commission. The cement and dump truck operators union with 15,000 members will hold its annual conference at the new Tanger casino. Approximately 10,000 trucks and mixers are expected to arrive at the casino.

“With the rise in sea level and the absence of dunes in Lewes, the bay will reach the canal, flooding the City of Lewes and creating an expanded boating and marina facility."

"Enough, enough," I cried. "Some things are better not known."

We thanked Madame Prunella and left her den as quickly as we could. On the way home, I suggested to my wife, "Let's have some neighbors over for cocktails. I want to enjoy this time with neighbors and friends in the present."
