Gallery One show ‘Black and White and In Between’ opens Aug. 31

August 31, 2016

Words are generally written in black and white to read easily. Movies shot in black and white can be mysterious, thought provoking, and sensitive. The term black and white can mean a choice between two opposite things, absolutely without any grey areas.

Black and white and anything in between opens endless possibilities for the artists at Gallery One in their new themed paintings, "Black and White and In Between."

"I love to work in black and white. The tonal values of the charcoal on the white of the paper are able to describe the early morning light of a yard in Bethany without the use of color" says Laura Hickman, describing her charcoal painting titled "Across the Yard".

The Delmarva coastline displays stark contrast and is a favorite subject of Gallery One artists. "Shadows," a watercolor by Sonia Hunt, shows a sunset behind tall trees casting very deep and dark shadows on the boats and buildings with a few dramatic slices of fading light. "I want to study the graying color and drama of the last light" says Lesley McCaskill in her watercolor "Docked for the Night." "In early evening the light is low and the colors gray in the fading light except for the bounce and last glimmer of the sun."

A little black boat is the subject for Joyce Condry's acrylic "Little Black Boat." She often imagines stories about her painting subjects. The little black boat, at first glance, looks neglected.......filled with sand, frayed rope, alone on the beach. I decided it is still loved and gave it a new coat of paint and oars!" Pat Riordan is also a story teller. "Cat Crossing" watercolor, describes the delicate journey along the fence of Tuxie’s daily walk to visit his neighbors.

"Traditionally a ‘colorist’, I have stayed almost completely within a black, white, and neutral palette to paint “Mac's Dragonfly I” acrylic, says Dale Sheldon. "With its nearly transparent wings and intriguing head and body, I hoped to capture the simplicity and delicacy of this insect.” Beginning in black and white, colorist Tara Funk Grim quickly added the rich colors of the meadows in her mixed media "Beach Birds in Wetlands."

"Wash Day," a watercolor by Cheryl Wisbrock, was inspired by one of the old frame hotels in lower (old town) Ocean City, Md. "I came across it walking with a friend on what apparently was wash day. All the bed linens were strung on laundry lines on the exterior of the building, as were kitchen towels and small items. It was exciting and inspiring to see the bright clean whites contrasting with the old textures and dark painted trim of this old building.

"Black and White and In Between" opens Wednesday, Aug. 31 and continues through Sept. 27. The popular Artisan Room features exciting textiles, hand blown glass, pottery, glass jewelry and wood pieces by local artists. Gallery One is open seven days a week 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and is always staffed by one of the artists. Go to www.GalleryOneDe.com or call 302-537-5055.
