Georgetown Oyster Eat draws enthusiasts from near and far

In the heart of Sussex County is a quaint community with a population known for its warmth and hospitality, boasting an event that has become a cherished tradition for locals and visitors alike – the Georgetown Fire Company Oyster Eat.

What began as a modest fundraiser for the Georgetown Fire Company in 1931 has evolved into a beloved tradition that draws oyster enthusiasts from across the state. Hundreds gather each February to enjoy the food and fellowship of the event, which has been recognized by U.S. Congress for its historical and cultural significance.

This year, about 1,700 pounds of oysters were cooked and served to the 800 people who attended the event.

In a world marked by rapid change, the Georgetown Fire Company’s Oyster Eat stands as a timeless reminder of the simple joys of community, connection and celebration – a tradition that will continue to unite generations to come.
