Gold Alert issued, then canceled for man who carried Confederate flag into U.S. Capitol

October 28, 2022

A Gold Alert was briefly issued Oct. 28 for a Laurel man who is set to be sentenced Jan. 20 in connection with carrying a Confederate flag into the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2020.

Police issued the alert after attempts to reach Kevin Seefried, 53, of Laurel were unsuccessful, but canceled it a few hours later, only saying, “Seefried has been located.”

Kevin Seefried and his son Hunter were arrested Jan. 14, 2021. Investigators say they were among the first people to enter the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6, through a broken window. Hunter cleared a large piece of glass from one of the windows, allowing others to enter the building, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Kevin was photographed carrying a Confederate flag inside the building.

Both men were found guilty of felony offense of obstruction of an official proceeding, and four misdemeanor offenses, including entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a Capitol Building; disorderly conduct in a Capitol Building, and parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol Building.

Hunter Seefried was sentenced Oct. 24 to 24 months in prison followed by one year of supervision and a $2,000 fine.

A sentencing date of Jan. 20, 2023, was set for Kevin Seefried.
