Grant to help Georgetown Boys & Girls Club members learn water safety

May 18, 2017

Sussex Academy, in partnership with the Georgetown Boys & Girls Club, recently received a Michael Phelps im Grant.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Michaels Phelps Foundation are committed to the safety of Boys & Girls Club members through water safety and health and wellness education. Their goal is for all members to be comfortable in and around water, advance swimming skills, set and attain personal goals, and have good overall health.

The im Grant is an 8- to 10-week program that offers a multifaceted lineup of water safety instruction, recreational aquatic activities, structured and organized swimming, and health, wellness and goal-setting education. The overall program provides participants age-appropriate programming as well as the opportunity to earn im medals by reaching program goals. The programs include im safe, im fun, im healthy, im fast and im successful. Georgetown Boys & Girls Club members will participate in the im program this summer at the Sussex Academy Aquatics Center.

The Georgetown Boys & Girls Club serves over 105 members on a daily basis, with over 90 percent of those served coming from low-income families.

Sussex Academy is a public charter, tuition-free school centrally located in Georgetown. Serving grades 6-12, the school practices a project-based learning approach, and all grade 11 and 12 students participate in the International Baccalaureate program.
