Grizzly’s Landscape Supply & Services moves

For the fourth time in nearly 40 years, Grizzly’s Landscape Supply & Services has moved locations.

The business is now located on the southbound side of Route 1, just north of the Steamboat Landing and Hudson roads intersection, at 14698 Coastal Highway.

Owner Dick Pack, aka Doc Grizzly, said this new Route 1 location offers better exposure on a busier highway. The compost specialists were most recently on Route 9, but also had a location on Route 24 before that. For its first 25 years in business, Grizzly’s was located in Milford.

“We had no road signage on Route 9,” he said. “Now, in addition to our regular customers, we’re already seeing people from Milton and Broadkill stopping, who otherwise wouldn’t have. It opens us up to a new market.”

Grizzly said he opened the business in 1979 because there was a demand for firewood and woodstoves due to an oil shortage.

“Suddenly, everybody wanted to burn wood,” he said.

The mulching and compost business, he said, started as a way to fill in during the rest of the year.

Over the years, Pack said, the company’s mission has grown; they now show people how to fix their soil so they can grow grass and plants. A lot of housing developments in eastern Sussex are built on sandy soil that’s been sterilized because of chemical-based farming, he said, adding that he works with two landscape architects and arborists.

Grizzly’s hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday; and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
