Only service animals to be permitted starting Oct. 7
September 27, 2023

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is set for 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 30, at  the Lewes Elementary School parking lot, 820 Savannah Road, Lewes.

There will be two demos this week. At 9 a.m., History Book Festival author Matt Garcia will discuss his life as a farmer and a book he co-edited, “Food Without Borders.” The book highlights the connections between the decisions people make concerning what they eat, and the social and geopolitical processes they enact to secure nourishment, territory and belonging.

Garcia is the Ralph and Richard Lazarus Professor of History, Latin American, Latino and Caribbean Studies, and Human Relations at Dartmouth College. His other books include “Eli and the Octopus: The CEO Who Tried to Reform One of the World’s Most Notorious Corporations” and “From the Jaws of Victory: The Triumph and Tragedy of Cesar Chavez and the Farm Worker Movement.” Books will be available for sale via cash payment only.

At 10 a.m., chef Megan Kee from Bramble & Brine at the Buttery will demonstrate how to make pumpkin gnocchi with brown butter sage sauce. She will be serving the gnocchi samples as well as a brunch bite from the newly launched breakfast and lunch service at Bramble & Brine. Kee attended Johnson and Wales University and owns Megan Collective. Her family members have been Lewes natives since before the Revolutionary War.

Customers will find a variety of decorative gourds, pumpkins, apple ciders, apples, fall and winter squashes, fresh ginger, figs, pears, sweet carrots, new lettuces, broccoli, lima beans, beets, fall potatoes, green beans, haricots verts, pole beans, shallots, garlic, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, arugula, kales, pork sausages, chops and ribs, hamburger and all cuts of beef, free-range chicken, oysters, hand-picked crab meat, crab soups, different honey varieties including butter bean, mushrooms, eggs, yogurt, milk, butter, kombucha, jams, fresh-baked breads, apple-cider donuts, pastries made with fruit from market vendors, cut-flower bouquets, locally roasted coffee and coffee drinks, cold-pressed juices made from local fruits and vegetables, and more.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is producer-only, so customers are able to buy directly from the farmers who grew the produce.

Dogs at the markets must be under control on a 6-foot, nonretractable leash inside the market to ensure the safety of all. The HLFM asks that dogs not be allowed to interact with other dogs or children in order to keep the market safe. Starting Saturday, Oct. 7, dogs and other pets (except for service animals) will not be permitted in the fall market. This is being done to ensure the safety of customers, vendors and volunteers.

There is limited parking available, so walking or biking to the market is encouraged for those who are able. For those who must drive to the market, there is some parking in the school bus parking lot, including accessible parking. There is also parking on Savannah Road and Sussex Drive.

The fall Saturday market hours will shift to 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Oct. 7 to Nov. 18, at Lewes Elementary School parking lot.

For a list of all vendors, their contact information and whether they take preorders, go to historiclewesfarmersmarket.org. Customers will pick up preorders at the vendor tent in the market.

The market processes payments from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, and Women, Infants and Children Program benefits, and continues to match SNAP up to $20 per market, per customer. Customers may go to the SNAP tent to process SNAP/EBT.

The HLFM continues its food pantry purchase program. Market customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk and other food from growers at the market to donate to this program every Saturday. At the end of the market, the produce and other foods are gathered and given to various food pantries including Epworth United Methodist Church and Casa San Francisco. The market team thanks customers for their generosity.

The market thanks The Lee Ann Wilkinson Group, 2023 HLFM Market Champion, and all other sponsors for their continued support.
