Historic Rehoboth lecture set Jan. 11 at Boardwalk Plaza

December 3, 2023

The next Rehoboth Beach History Lecture, covering the “History of South Rehoboth and Rehoboth Beach Country Club,” is set for 7:15 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 11, in the Sussex Room at the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel.

Paul Lovett, creator of the miniature village diorama of Railroad Era Rehoboth Avenue, will moderate.

During the roaring 1920s, Henry Conant purchased what was originally the Thompson Farm property. He partitioned the land between Philadelphia Street, which was the southern boundary of Rehoboth at the time, and Silver Lake into 1,500 25-foot-wide lots, calling the newly incorporated area Rehoboth Heights. The Thompson homestead was turned into the clubhouse for a nine-hole golf course. By a controversial vote, the City of Rehoboth Beach voted to annex Rehoboth Heights in 1927.

A donation of $25 is requested for the lecture. Proceeds in excess of expenses will go to sustain the diorama project. To reserve a seat, email Lovett at 302-893-9391 or email paul@pdlovett.com.

Attendees are encouraged to begin with dinner in the beautiful Victoria’s Restaurant next to the lecture venue. Reservations should be made for 5:30 p.m. or earlier to allow time for an enjoyable meal before the presentation begins; call 302-227-0615 to reserve dinner seats.
