Horace Jake Knowles, DuPont retiree

January 19, 2017

Horace Jake Knowles, 95, of Lewes, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017, at Cadbury at Lewes. He was born Sunday, Sept. 11, 1921, in Blades, son of the late Horace and Mattie (Walker) Knowles.
Mr. Knowles proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was stationed at Fort Miles with the 261st coastal artillery from 1940-44. Before being sent overseas as part of Patton's 3rd army, he was stationed briefly at Fort Bragg, N.C. He remained in Europe in a long range artillery division until being discharged in 1945. After the war, Mr. Knowles worked for the DuPont Chemical Company as a unit operator, retiring after a lifetime career with them. In more recent years he was a valuable contributor to the history and restoration of Fort Miles. Forever a Phillies fan, Mr. Knowles was an avid gardener and loved to fish. More than anything, however, he cherished time spent with his family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who will be dearly missed.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Knowles was preceded in death by his brothers: Howard, Henry, James and Harold; and his sisters, Grace and Elsie Bel. He is survived by his beloved wife, Madlyn (Waite) Knowles; his son, Don E. Knowles and his wife Nina of Lewes; his grandchildren: Christopher Knowles of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Donna Tomlinson and her husband Marc of Bear; and his great-grandchildren: Laura Tomlinson, Sarah Tomlinson, Rachel Tomlinson, Maya Knowles and Christopher Knowles.
A Celebration of Mr. Knowles' Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
Memorial contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
