With this being Human Trafficking Prevention Month as recognized by Gov. John Carney and the recent letters that you have published, I have tried to do some research on trafficking in Delaware. This is not an easy task, as there is not one place that you can go to get this information. According to security.org, I have learned that in 2021, Wilmington was No. 1 in the United States for registered sex offenders per capita. Delaware is located close to several large cities that are known to have trafficking activity. I-95, a major highway connecting these cities, runs through Delaware, making our children targets. I understand that even though the State of Delaware claims a much lower number, there were at least 3,100 victims of trafficking in our state, according to an independent study put out by Avery Research. So, imagine my surprise to learn that our Attorney General Kathy Jennings has prosecuted very few cases under the human trafficking statute. Join with me in reaching out to Attorney General Jennings and asking that this becomes a top priority in her office. Her email is attorney.general@delaware.gov.
We also need to get education programs in the Cape Henlopen School District so that our children can understand the dangers and recognize the strategies being used against them by mostly friends, family members and social media sites. You might want to go to https://endsexualexploitation.org/dirtydozenlist-2023 like I did to see the top sites used. Does the Office of the Child Advocate plan to go to the schools in Delaware to warn the students? What has the Department of Education planned to protect our children? Have they considered getting other groups to come in and talk to our children? This is modern-day slavery of our children, and it must be stopped! With the movie “Sound of Freedom” and the recent exposure of this crime, we cannot stick our heads in the sand. We all have a part to play to take a stand against trafficking in our state.
