Indian Mission UMC celebrates Thanksgiving

November 24, 2016

Indian Mission United Methodist Church provided a Thanksgiving dinner for the community Nov. 19. Family, friends and neighbors gathered together in the Nanticoke Indian Center in Long Neck to enjoy the traditional meal. There was plenty of turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, green beans, yams, mashed potatoes and rolls for everyone. Diners also enjoyed a wide variety of desserts including pies, cakes and cookies.

According to historians, the first Thanksgiving took place in the autumn of 1621 when 90 members of the Wampanoag nation and 50 pilgrims fellowshipped and feasted for three days. Two centuries later in 1863 President Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday. His decision was influenced by a woman who just wouldn't take no for an answer. After 17 years of letter writing and campaigning, Sarah Josepha Hales finally convinced Lincoln, and the rest is history. Today, millions of Americans reunite with family and friends to carry on the tradition, enjoying great food and giving thanks on the final Thursday in November.
