As the weather begins to turn and the town comes alive again beginning this St. Patrick's Day weekend, I think it is worth noting the positive things happening in town.
Under the new council and Mayor TJ Redefer's leadership, there's a lot of optimism and positive progress happening in Dewey. As chair of the Dewey Budget and Finance Committee, I've worked closely with Dale Cooke and Steve Huse to coordinate with the department managers to come up with a budget for the coming fiscal year that is reasonable, achievable, and gives a modest increase to most town employees.
Thanks to Karen Kruger and the Town Manager Search Committee, we have a great new town manager in Scott Koenig, who brings a wealth of experience and professionalism to the town. The mayor and council are nearly ready to resolve a long-standing lawsuit against the town for selective code enforcement and denial of due process by the previous administration.
The controversial police participation in the LESO military surplus program that resulted in a broad procedures review of most town procurement practices is nearly complete, and we can put that behind us, and move on to important issues such as continuing to increase transparency, refining our code, policies and procedures, and planning and beginning to save for critical long-term issues such as bayside flooding and sea level rise.
Dewey has entered a new phase of positive growth, professional and fiscal responsibility, and while there are many challenges ahead, I feel the sense of optimism and positive results building, thanks to the new council and mayor's leadership. It's a new day in Dewey, and I've never been prouder of our little town.
