James A. Cannon Sr., retired Sussex employee

James A. Cannon Sr., 73, of Millsboro, passed away peacefully Monday, April 10, 2017, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.

Mr. Cannon was born in Milford, son of the late John T. Cannon Sr., and Mary Belle (Willey) Cannon.

He worked for Sussex County Council for over 17 years. Mr. Cannon was a life member of Mid-Sussex Rescue Squad and the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company. He had been very active in both organizations prior to his disability.

James served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in August 1968 with the rank of Boilerman Petty Officer 2nd Class.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Gary L. Cannon.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Dorothy (Donovan) Cannon; three sons, James A. Cannon Jr. and wife Karen of Millsboro, Dean A. Cannon Sr., and wife Susan of Seaford, and Gy Sgt. Daryl Cannon and wife Geri, currently stationed in Okinawa, Japan; 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia C. Ewing and Bonnie C. Workman, both of Bridgeville; and two brothers, John T. Cannon Jr. of Bridgeville and Andrew F. Cannon of Georgetown.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, April 17, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963m or Mid-Sussex Rescue Squad, 31738 Indian Mission Road, Millsboro, DE 19966.
