Jeffrey C. Burnham Scholarship winners announced

September 26, 2016

The family of Jeff Burnham is pleased to announce and congratulate Cape's 2016 recipients of the Jeffrey C. Burnham Scholarship. Established in 2015, the Jeffrey C. Burnham Scholarship was initiated to celebrate the life of Jeff Burnham while recognizing outstanding Cape students who exemplify academic and athletic strengths. Brandon Nixon and Sarah Dziak received the Jeff Burnham Scholarship in the amount of $500 each to help with the costs of their college education.

Nixon just began his first semester at the University of Delaware, with a major in mathematics. He played Vikings football and was among the Cape teammates who presented the retired jersey honoring Jeff Burnham to the Burnham family in September 2014. A resident of Lewes, Nixon also participated in Cape's track and field program.

Dziak also just began her freshman year at the University of Delaware, majoring in nursing. From Rehoboth Beach, Dziak participated in track and field and ran cross country while at Cape. Her long-term goals include becoming a nurse practitioner in obstetrics.

Jeff Burnham was a high school teacher, as well as a baseball coach and football coach, and he passed away in June 2014. He graduated from Cape Henlopen in 1986, where he was No. 74, a linebacker for Vikings football. Burnham had faith in all youth, believing there was genuine good in every soul. He mentored and counseled hundreds of teens across southern Delaware. He cared deeply about those he taught and stayed connected to athletes he coached over the years. He wanted to see every young person succeed and make the best of their lives.

The scholarship fund carries on Burnham's desire to help young people and athletes to achieve their dreams for the future. To make tax-deductible contributions to the scholarship fund at any time, mail checks to Jeffrey C. Burnham Scholarship Fund, M&T Bank, 107 Front St., Milton, DE 19968.
