John Roy ‘Mickey’ McIntosh, esteemed educator

John Roy "Mickey" McIntosh, 85, born April 20, 1933, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2018, in a peaceful, loving environment.

John grew up in Chicago, Ill., and graduated from Roosevelt University with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He received his master’s degree in guidance and counseling from the University of Chicago. He was a guidance counselor at Horace Mann High School in Gary, Ind., then attended Purdue University and earned a doctorate degree in school administration. Of note, in 1963 John participated in the Civil Rights March in Washington, D.C.

In 1972, John was hired as an assistant principal by the Newark School District in Newark. He was ultimately the principal of Newark High School before becoming the assistant director of the Delaware Autism Program.

While working in the school district, John also was in the Air Force Reserves as a med tech for 21 years. He loved the Air Force and all the friends he made there.

While in the Reserves, John served in Desert Storm. While in the Army, he served during the post World War II years in Germany.

Upon retiring from the school district and the Air Force, John moved to Frankford.

John loved vacations, tennis, cycling and white water rafting. He absolutely loved to dance and had a wonderful voice.

In addition to his best friend/former wife, Marie McIntosh, he leaves behind his children Karen Boyd, Marc McIntosh, Jeff McIntosh and Eve Tolefree, their spouses and his grandchildren.

Additionally, he is survived by siblings, June Parker, Donald McIntosh, Riley McIntosh and Mona Lisa Clayton, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services and burial will be private at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
