Judy Manthorpe, friend to everyone

November 30, 2016

Judith Gerhold Manthorpe left her family and friends Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016. She was the perfect Navy wife, a loving mother, engaging friend and accomplished artist.

Born in March 1935, in Washington, D.C., to John Frederick Gerhold and Ruby Johns Gerhold, she was inspired by her talented parents. Judith studied art from a young age, and attended Bethesda Chevy Chase High School and Mary Washington College.

She met William H.J. Manthorpe Jr. while still in high school and he was at the Naval Academy. They married in June 1955 and have been together ever since. Judith raised two lovely and successful daughters, Kimberly Manthorpe Hoefer, married to Frederick S. Hoefer III of Atlanta, Ga., and Jennifer Manthorpe Mackey, married to Barton L. Mackey Jr. of Wilmington. Her grandson Edmund A.M. Wooller and wife Georgia Harris Wooller have given her a great-grandson, Harris. She is equally proud of her granddaughter Emily Manthorpe Mackey and grandson Barton L. Mackey III. Her sister Jayne Gerhold Seaton and husband Raymond Seaton live nearby. All will miss her love and guidance mightily.

While following William to Paris, Norfolk, San Francisco and Moscow, traveling to many places in between and often residing in Washington, all the while staying at home and keeping the family together while he was away, Judith pursued her artistic career. Painting in a variety of styles over the years as her surroundings and muses changed, she was a frequent participant in local art shows and sold numerous paintings to organizations and individual collectors.

Judith was honored to be asked to paint a collection of paintings that hang in the individual rooms of the children's wing of the National Cancer Center in Bethesda, Md. Her paintings have also been added to the U.S. Department of State collection that rotates through American Embassies worldwide.

In the early summer, when more of her widely dispersed family and friends can attend, there will be a celebration of her life at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club. Donations in memory of Judith Manthorpe may be made to Delaware Hospice.
