Kids to run with the bull June 23

June 16, 2018

When Bull Run founder Michael McDonnell decided to get silly with his friends 22 years ago, he probably never imagined that one day he’d be bringing his own children to run with the bull in a family-friendly version. Yet here it is, time for the Running of the Bull, an annual and beloved Dewey Beach tradition, and the kids’ version is now a staple for summer fun on the beach, too.

McDonnell noted that the seven-year anniversary of the kids’ run is a milestone for him in many ways, and it encourages participation in this unique event. He said, “Everyone with kids should absolutely go to this. It’s amazing! So much fun for the family! Now, this is the first year in almost a decade my family isn’t at the beach that weekend, so I’m sleeping late and missing it, but everyone else with kids should absolutely go to this!”

Kids and their families will gather at 10:30 a.m. at the Dagsworthy Avenue beach for a good old-fashioned beach dance party complete with music, free T-shirts and games led by Kelly Ranieri. She gets the crowd of kiddos warmed up and excited for the Starboard Bull, who will make his highly anticipated appearance over the dune to chase that pack of wild children.

Ranieri loves organizing the event. She said, “It is so much fun and has become a family tradition for many! I love to see the families return year after year. It never gets old!”

Happy screams and hilarious running from toddlers and young children hopped up on juice boxes is the name of the game. Everyone loves the chase, and parents are assured great photo opportunities with the bull. It’s the perfect way to kick off what is sure to be a crazy fun day in Dewey Beach.
