Kuhns wants to make Rehoboth more proactive

June 23, 2017

I would like to ask you, the eligible voters in the City of Rehoboth Beach to vote for me for mayor in the city election Saturday, Aug. 12. I'm writing now, because I would like voters to take the time to get to know me, my background and the reason I am running.

Also, I would like to alert the residents, property owners and business owners who may be eligible to vote that you have until July 13 to register to vote for this election. Call City Hall at 302-227-6181 for information.

While I believe our current mayor is to be applauded for his many years of diligent service, I see this as a time for new leadership for the 21st century. This wonderful city has been governed the old-fashioned way, with issues being discussed and addressed when they come up, but with little strategic planning or forethought. But it's no longer the 1990s.

There are critical financial, environmental and quality of life issues that require a studied long view, with a contemporary vision. It's time to let the sun shine on all city activities, be totally accountable to the citizens, and be proactive in every area of our government.

I want to work with the board of commissioners and you, the residents and business owners, to make that happen.

The city should continue to focus on our full-time residents, protecting our hometown community, but that should not be the only focus. The city needs to be pro-small business and pro-tourism as well. After all, a balance of these three key elements will make our community successful in the future.

We need to research and learn from other beach communities, use the resources of state agencies, and work with associations and organizations that have solved some of the problems we continue to experience.

There is so much more we can be and do. Rather than going it alone, with 30-year-old policies and outdated visions, we need to forge an exciting, new vision for our community and then work together to make it happen.

In subsequent letters and mailings I will give you specifics on how we can make this vision a reality. In the meantime, I hope you will seek me out with your questions, comments, ideas and opinions. My email is kuhnsformayor@comcast.net, my phone number is 302-430-8484. I want to hear from you, get to know you and have you learn about me.

Together, we can make exciting things happen for Rehoboth Beach!
