Let's stick to the issue on memorial

May 22, 2018

I was happy to get a response from William McCauley to the advertisement about ending state funding for the Marvel Carriage Museum, which hosts a Confederate Memorial on its grounds.

Unfortunately, the letter didn't address the issue. Instead, it made baseless charges that are both incorrect and irrelevant.
The Progressive Democrats of Sussex County do not in any way, shape or form oppose a private individual's or organization's right to fly a Confederate battle flag. The reason is simple. It's in our self-interest.

Just as the First Amendment protects the right to fly the Confederate flag, so it protects the right to protest state funding for a museum that implicitly affirms slavery and white supremacy.

That's the issue. Period. It has nothing to do with pre-Civil War history, imagined conspiracies or so-called political correctness. It has everything to do with our tax dollars supporting, in any way, a relic of a repugnant past.

So, Mr. McCauley, let's begin a real discussion.
