Lewes in Bloom expands number of gardens served

June 7, 2017

Otis Smith Park, also known as the Rotary Club barbecue park, is now being planted and maintained by the award-winning Lewes in Bloom group. More than 200 perennials and annuals were planted throughout the park by volunteers May 18.

Going forward, the park will be sustained by Lewes in Bloom, which manages 18 other spaces throughout the city. Art in Bloom, a committee of Lewes in Bloom, has submitted a proposal to Lewes City Council, which has appointed an application review committee to consider placement of a Lyman Whitaker sculpture, "Wind Symphony," in the park. If approved, fundraising will begin to bring this sculpture to Otis Smith Park.

Lewes in Bloom is a volunteer organization of more than 170 members. Each year its members volunteer hundreds of hours planting thousands of bulbs and plants throughout the city. It promotes the beautification and maintenance of Historic Lewes and the community at large. It is dedicated to helping Lewes boost its attractiveness through a variety of efforts including historical preservation, environmental awareness, a children's garden, floral displays and more.

Once finalized, Lewes in Bloom will oversee the Garden for All Ages. With Lewes in Bloom's assistance, Lewes won the America in Bloom Circle of Champions Award for small towns at the 2015 America in Bloom Symposium in Holland, Mich. For more information, go to www.lewesinbloom.org.
