Lewes in Bloom May Day decorating contest set May 4

Lewes in Bloom will sponsor a May Day celebration Saturday, May 4. Merchants and residents of the 19958 ZIP code are encouraged to take part in the age-old tradition of greeting spring by adorning front doors, doorknobs, porches or front steps with a basket of fresh flowers or fresh floral bouquet.

In the afternoon, the Broadkill Jammers will be providing music in the gazebo at Mary Vessels Park.

May Day committee judges will award first- and second-prize ribbons in residential and business categories. All entries from children under 14 will receive a ribbon.

For the first time, a $250 cash grand prize, generously donated by Active Adults Realty in Lewes, will be awarded to either a residential or business winner.

Entering the May basket judging is optional, but Lewes in Bloom encourages residents to join in the decorating and restore the tradition of honoring May Day with fresh flowers on their doors. Decorating can be as simple as tying flowers from one’s yard on a doorknob with ribbon, or as elaborate as hanging a basket or wreath with flower bouquets.
