Lewes cyclist puzzled by Savannah Road proposal

March 23, 2017

I am a Lewes cyclist, and ride nearly every day, weather permitting. I am puzzled by the attention being given to a proposed Savannah Road trail between the drawbridge and the beach.

We don't need it.

I ride that stretch often and find it one of the easiest and safest stretches of cycling in town. Biking along the road in both directions feels quite safe, with plenty of room. And there is already a pedestrian sidewalk the entire length from the bridge to the beach.

Lewes is a bikeable town. There are places that really need attention, but the road to the beach is not one of them.

What about the stretch of Gills Neck Road between the end of the railroad trail and Savannah Road? It is a major biking stretch, but it has no sidewalk and no shoulders. It's a nightmare for cyclists.

Kings Highway needs attention, too. Students still can't go from Cape High down Kings Highway into town without walking in the road.

I find current planning priorities puzzling.
