Lights of Life goes disco

Breast Cancer Coalition gala celebrates life
February 7, 2018

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition held its annual fundraiser Feb. 24 at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino to honor and support those who have been affected by breast cancer. This event was a celebration of living and giving, and allowed for donors, survivors, organizations, companies and volunteers to play an integral role in contributing to the fight against breast cancer.

Guests enjoyed an evening of great food, a social atmosphere and many festivities. The ballroom at Dover Downs was transformed into a disco, with pink lights illuminating the entire room representing the continued fight against breast cancer. Guests arrived in their best disco and '70s-inspired outfits, truly embracing the theme of the event to bring life to the party.

The occasion featured a variety of events throughout the evening. Guests were greeted with hors d'oeuvres and had access to a photobooth to forever capture the memories of the special night. The silent auction featured hundreds of donations for this worthy cause. An open bar and the distribution of tickets for the Pink Duck Drawing began the night.

After an introduction from Tynetta Brown, a board member of the DBCC, the crowd was seated for a formal, full-course dinner. As dessert was served, Master of Ceremonies David Skocik began the showcase event of the night - the Breast Cancer Survivor Fashion Show featuring eight breast cancer survivors, including a mother and daughter. The participants were dressed in disco-era clothing and jewelry provided by local boutiques and businesses to add to the theme of the occasion.

The strength to overcome breast cancer truly makes these women, and women around the world, an inspiration to others affected by this disease.

As the ladies exited the stage upon completion of the fashion show, the Pink Duck Drawing Raffle was held in which a couple won a 65-inch 4K television. The live auction then began with the Hon. Dave Wilson serving as auctioneer. There were 11 items to bid on, including concert tickets, unique experiences, vacations and sports memorabilia featuring a signed football from Super Bowl LII Champion Carson Wentz.

Wilson channeled his auctioneer skills and interacted with the crowd to obtain the highest bid which will be donated to further research and events that benefit breast cancer patients, survivors, and families.

The night wrapped up with music by DJ Un33k.
