Margaret Lucille Jones, beautician, church founder

October 3, 2023

Margaret Lucille Jones slipped quietly into eternal rest Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023.

Margaret began her journey among us Sept. 12, 1946, daughter of the late Gladys Finney Coon and the late Melvin Sunkett Sr. She lived in Lewes all of her life, and was a 1964 graduate of William C. Jason High School in Georgetown, where she was a drum majorette in the high school band.

She was a licensed beautician for over 30 years and was the owner of Jones Beauty Boutique, the first black-owned business located on Second Street in Lewes. She, along with her husband, Bishop Arthur D. Jones Jr., founded Trinity Faith Christian Center in 1988, where she served as co-pastor for 36 years. She was a dynamic, energetic, caring teacher of the adult church school. Together, they also opened the TFCC Bible Institute and Destiny Christian Academy on the same campus.

She was preceded in death by her father Melvin Sunkett Sr.; mother, Gladys Finney Coon; her sister, Allene Carter; two brothers, Melvin Sunkett Jr. and Lester Sunkett; sister Mary “Marie” Peterson; three nephews, Robert Carter Jr., James Peterson and Eugene “Gene Boy” Petersen Jr.; and grandson, Malakai Jones.

Cherishing her fondest memories are her husband of 55 years, Bishop Arthur D. Jones Jr.; two sons, Arthur D. Jones III (Shelly) of Lewes, and Andre Jones of Georgetown; two grandsons, Austin Jones and Caleb Jones of Lewes; one brother, Randolph Sunkett (Karen) of Lincoln; one sister-in-law, Kathie Sunkett of Harbeson; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at noon, Saturday, Oct. 7, at Trinity Faith Christian Center, 15516 New Road, Lewes. Family and friends may visit two hours prior to the service.
