Martin Lowell Bush, a Quiet Man

June 14, 2018

There once was a very quiet man born Nov. 11, 1930, to Bertha and Harry Bush in Brooklyn, N.Y. Martin Lowell Bush, of course, grew up to be an avid New York sports fan, relishing in the Stanley Cup defeat by his Rangers over the Vancouver Canucks while vacationing in Vancouver.

Marty served proudly in the U.S. Navy. He was very patriotic and always carried a copy of the Constitution of the United States and the Declaration of Independence in his wallet. He graduated New York University with a degree in chemical engineering. He later attended Seton Hall University and received his law degree.

During the '50s he worked at Allied Chemical where he met Irene Gould whom he wed April 22, 1961. They settled in Florham Park, N.J., and raised three beautiful girls, Alison, Amy and Vivian. The Bush household had its fair share of requisite pets, the favorites being their dog, Shaggy, and their horse, Tally-Ho, as well as the too-short-for-this-world parakeet. Raising his family no more than 30 minutes from Gram and Pop, Marty's life was enriched immeasurably by being part of the Gould clan. He loved (and tolerated) the many family vacations to Token Lake, Long Beach Island and other various spots. His love of casinos, horse racing, golf, and Kentucky Derby Day parties complete with mint juleps carried him through.

In 1983, Marty moved his family to Bridgeton, N.J., to work for the J.G. Durand glass company. He lost his wife Irene in 1997. The loving, dedicated care he gave her was a tribute to his manner and admired by all who knew him. Selling their home, he split his time between his daughters in Delaware and Colorado.

He is predeceased by his parents, brother Sidney and sister Norma. Marty is survived by his children, Alison Flournoy of Basking Ridge, N.J., Amy Lenig of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Vivian Bush of Rehoboth Beach. He also leaves his sons-in-law, Jim Flournoy and Jon Lenig; as well as his treasures of life, grandchildren Sarah Opal, Jasper Daniel and Sydney Marie. He is missed by in-laws, nieces and nephews, too numerous to count.

Marty passed away May 7, 2018, in Colorado, surrounded by his loving family. He has been cremated and a private ceremony of his life will be held at a later date.

Here's to a Quiet Man.
