Metropolitan Opera live ‘Romeo et Juliette’ set Jan. 21

January 17, 2017

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation are proud to present The Metropolitan Opera's live broadcast of Charles Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette" at 12:55 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 21, at Cape Henlopen High School Theater.

In this new Met production, the team of Diana Damrau and Vittorio Grigolo are reunited as opera's classic lovers Romeo and Juliette. These two singers have a chemistry that's distinctly rare for opera. Based on the epic Shakespearean play, this lush adaptation by Bartlett Sher won critical acclaim for its vivid 18th century milieu and stunning costumes at its Salzburg Festival premiere in 2008. Featuring four exquisite duets sung by the lovers, Gounod's stirring interpretation of the star-crossed lovers’ plight explores the passionate power of love as expressed through music and operatic voice. The music is conducted by Gianandrea Noseda, with Elliot Madore and Mikhail Petrenko rounding out the all-star cast. In addition to the opera performance, the HD series features Met opera stars conducting live interviews with cast and/or various production crew members while showing behind-the-scene workings.

Admission for The Met: Live in HD broadcasts is $25 for adults; $22 for film society members, Met members and seniors aged 65 and older; and $15 for students with ID and children 12 and under. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Online reservations may be made with MasterCard or VISA until noon Friday, Jan. 20. Admission will be offered at the door with cash payment only.
