Mike Zygmonski attends Cabernet Academy in Alexander Valley

June 16, 2017

Mike Zygmonski, SoDel Concepts director of wine, attended Cabernet Academy, a wine immersion program in Alexander Valley, Calif. The Somm Journal, a hospitality industry publication, and Alexander Valley Winegrowers hosted the educational intensive, which featured master sommeliers Fred Dame, vice president of prestige accounts for American Wine & Spirits of California, and Eric Entrikin, director of wine education for Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits.

Geyserville, Calif.-based Trione Vineyards & Winery, whose products are featured at the new Bluecoast Seafood Grill & Raw Bar in Rehoboth Beach, sponsored Zygmonski, who wanted to learn more about the climate, microclimate, soil and the soil types in the region.

"I wanted to see how all these factors made the wines in this area so unique - they are world-class Cabs," said Zygmonski, who became a certified sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers in New York. "I also wanted to learn more about the winemakers and why they chose the Alexander Valley."

The experience lived up to his expectations, he said: "The winemakers were generous with their time and their knowledge. I have a deep appreciation for the work that goes into their wine."

Scott Kammerer, president of SoDel Concepts, said it's an honor to be invited to attend such an event, and the company did not hesitate to send Zygmonski to California. "One of our company goals is to nurture our staff to help them become the best they can be," he said. "That, in turn, makes us the best that we can be."

Zygmonski, who has revamped the wine menus at all the locations since becoming wine director, will be on hand at the new Bluecoast all summer.
