Millsboro boy sleeps over in Phillies clubhouse

December 3, 2016

Garrett Rogers, 10, from Millsboro, who is currently receiving treatment at Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, attended the Phillies Clubhouse Sleepover Nov. 18. He brought his friend Major Pride and mom Wendy Rogers.

Nine different families from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and Nemours Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children arrived with sleeping bags and their pajamas for this special sleepover in the Phillies clubhouse.

They were greeted virtually by Phillies General Manager Matt Klentak, and they signed a one-day contract with the Philadelphia Phillies. After becoming members of the Phillies, the kids were escorted to personalized lockers in the Phillies clubhouse. As new “major leaguers,” they headed to the Phillies’ batting cages for some hitting practice, while getting some tips from the Phillies ballgirls. Everyone was treated to a pizza party, ice cream and popcorn, as well as a surprise visit from the Phillie Phanatic. After getting in their PJs, the children enjoyed a movie in the clubhouse and a scavenger hunt tour around the ballpark. The event concluded the following morning with a fun breakfast in the clubhouse and photo opportunities in the Phillies dugout.

This idea started two years ago, after an anonymous fan who won a Phillies Sleepover from the Phantastic Auction donated his sleepover to children at area hospitals. The Phillies decided to pay it forward, and now include a sleepover as part of the Season of Giving.
