Mumford, Harrington to head Love Creek Elementary

New school scheduled to open in fall

Two long-time Cape educators will take the helm when the district's fifth elementary opens in the fall.

Patricia Mumford, who has served as principal of both Rehoboth and H.O. Brittingham elementaries, was hired as principal for Love Creek Elementary, the new K-5 school on Route 24. Joining Mumford will be Wendy Harrington, a teacher who has worked as math specialist for HOB.

“I have high expectations, but there is nothing I ask of the staff that I would not do myself,” Mumford said.

Mumford has worked for the Cape Henlopen School District in many capacities, starting in 1997, when she was hired as a paraeducator for Rehoboth Elementary. Mumford earned an education degree at Wilmington College, and she was hired as a fifth-grade teacher at Rehoboth. By 2003, she moved to sixth-grade when the new Mariner Middle School opened.

Mumford's administrative career began two years later when she became assistant principal at HOB. She was named principal of Rehoboth in 2009 and served as interim principal at HOB in 2016 after Christy Greaves retired.

Mumford said she can't wait for Love Creek to open. “This school has a unique opportunity to bring staff and students together from four excellent buildings to make a new community. This is a very rare opportunity for a principal,” she said.

Harrington also has deep roots in the district. She is a 1989 Cape High grad who returned to the district after earning a teaching degree at University of Delaware. She first worked at the Sussex Consortium while earning a master's degree in special education from Delaware State University.

Harrington taught third grade at Shields Elementary and then moved to Milton Elementary in 2003 as a math specialist. She worked at Milton until 2012 when she moved to HOB in the same position.

“Love Creek is an exciting opportunity to bring together staff and students from all over the district where we can share collaborative input and offer new ideas to create a wonderful community of learners,” she said.
