New traffic patterns could affect Lewes traffic

April 5, 2018

I took the opportunity to attend the recent DelDOT workshops held at Cape Henlopen High School in March. I was impressed by the work put into creating a plan to try to manage the sprawl that is upon us here. As a longtime resident of New Road, I have a vested interest in seeing a thoughtful, balanced approach in managing the inevitable growth with the need for safe, flowing traffic.

With that in mind, I agree with the Lewes City Council concerning the likelihood of substantially increasing traffic on New Road. That scenario, along with the sale of the Groome land, will make the situation untenable.

Currently there are Old Orchard Road (subject to future DelDOT improvements), 4th Street and Pilottown Road as access points to downtown Lewes. All but Old Orchard are residential. In addition, New Road is almost overwhelmed now.

While I am optimistic that DelDOT is on the right track in general, there needs to be a better plan for access into Lewes from the north. New Road, 4th Street and Pilottown Road were never designed for this type of traffic.
