New Year’s Eve Anchor Drop set on Lightship Overfalls Dec. 31

November 27, 2016

The Overfalls Foundation will have its annual New Year’s Eve Anchor Drop from the Lightship Overfalls starting at 11:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 31. Over the years this has become a popular event for residents and visitors to Lewes. The festivities start with hot chocolate and socializing around toasty fires until midnight when the anchor comes down and everybody sings “Auld Lang Syne.” Everyone is invited and no advance arrangements are needed.

There had been a concern that the Lightship Overfalls would not be in Lewes for New Year’s Eve as there was a possibility that she would be in a shipyard for periodic maintenance. However, the foundation was not able to schedule a dredging contractor this fall to remove the shoal that had built up and was blocking the ship's access to the canal.

The soonest opportunity for dredging will be in fall 2017, so the shipyard date has been rescheduled accordingly. To preserve the ship's hull in the meantime, divers will come and replace as many of the sacrificial zinc anodes that protect against galvanic corrosion as can be accessed with the ship in the water.
