Officials warn of court phone scam
State officials are warning of a telephone scam in which calls appear to be coming from a Justice of the Peace Court and demand bail money to secure the release of a relative. Justice of the Peace Courts will never call individuals and request bail payment. Those calls could come directly from the person being held, but never from a court employee, a press release states. The court has received several complaints from residents who received bogus phone calls. Complaints have found these calls begin with scammers claiming a person's son or grandson is in jail and a payment of $500 is required to secure their release. When people tried to get more information about the situation, the calls were disconnected. Anyone who has been victimized should contact 302-323-6333 or mark.hitch@state.de.us.
