Committee members appointed in Dewey
Dewey Beach commissioners voted unanimously Nov. 17 to appoint Iris Curtis and Manny Bramao to the budget and finance committee, and Cindy Souza to the infrastructure committee. Drew Martin was named chair of the infrastructure committee.
Milton tree lighting set for Nov. 25
Milton will light up the season Saturday, Nov. 25, with the annual Christmas tree lighting in Milton Memorial Park.
Festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the lighting to take place at 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by Al Frantic, Milton Lions Club and Milton Community Foundation, and will include cookies and hot chocolate.
Rehoboth Beach tree lighting Nov. 24
The City of Rehoboth Beach will officially welcome the holiday season and host its annual tree lighting event at 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 24. The event begins with holiday music by the Cape Brass Ensemble, followed by a sing-along led by a troupe from Clear Space Theatre. The community tree will be lit at 7 p.m. The tree-lighting event is free and open to the public.
No DART bus service Thanksgiving Day
DART statewide services, both fixed route and paratransit, will not operate on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 23. DART will operate regular service Friday, Nov. 24, on both fixed route and paratransit. For more information, go to DartFirstState.com or call 1-800-652-DART.
Lewes passes tree-density ordinance
Lewes Mayor and City Council voted unanimously Nov. 13 to approve a tree-density ordinance aimed at growing the city’s tree canopy.
It requires at least one tree to be planted per 2,500 square feet of land on a parcel. Mayor and council eliminated a provision that would have allowed a fee to be paid in lieu of planting a tree.
The ordinance applies to major and minor subdivisions, site-development plans and new residential construction.
Mayor Andrew Williams thanked Tree Ordinance Subcommittee Chair Debra Evalds for her panel’s work on crafting the ordinance.
County offices closing early Dec. 1
Sussex County government offices will close to the public at 12 p.m., Friday, Dec. 1, to allow employees to attend the annual Mildred King Luncheon. County offices will be open for regular business Dec. 1 from 8:30 a.m. until midday; people with business to conduct at county facilities should plan accordingly on that date.
County offices will return to their normal business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 4.
The Mildred King Luncheon is held each December to recognize county employees for their service to county government and Sussex County citizens.
The event is named in honor of former county employee Mildred King, who served Sussex County for nearly 30 years.
Sussex council awards nonprofit grants
Sussex County Council awarded the following councilmanic grants during its Nov. 14 meeting: $1,000 to New Coverdale Outreach Mission, and $2,000 to Girl Scouts of Chesapeake Bay Council for an educational trip to Savannah, Ga.
Sussex council not meeting rest of November
Sussex County Council will not meet Tuesday, Nov. 21, or Tuesday, Nov. 28.
The next regularly scheduled meeting will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 5, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown.
