Nov. 19 is last day of Lewes Farmers Market this season

November 16, 2016

This Saturday, Nov. 19, is the last day of the Historic Lewes Farmers Market for the season. It is also the last Saturday to purchase fresh produce, turkeys, baked goods and much more for Thanksgiving. The Fall Market is located at the Richard Shields Elementary School parking lot at the corner of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive in Lewes, Delaware, and the last market is open this Saturday from 9 a.m. til noon. The 2017 market will open May 6 at George H.P. Smith Park.

The final market pairing of the year will be a demonstration of a fall coleslaw with cabbage from Ficner Farm, carrots from Mossflower Cottage Farm, and garlic from Colchester Farm. The demonstration will take place at 10 a.m.

At this Saturday's market, farmers/producers will be offering fall harvest items - acorn squash, leeks, Brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, broccoli, fennel, beets, carrots, radishes, cauliflower, cabbages, onions-both spring and bulb, lettuces, and fall greens such as mustard greens, Swiss chard, spinach, collard greens, and more. Vendors will also have apples, mushrooms, turkeys, chicken, ham, pork, lamb, beef, oysters, freshly laid eggs, breads, pastries, pies, milk, eggnog, yogurt, butter, and more as well as beautiful flowers for the table, and fall-flavored wreaths for the door!

The book table is back at the market! The HLFM will have books, gifts, and 2017 calendars at incredible discounts for the holidays. (All sales are a donation to the HLFM.)

The market is participating in the 85th Annual Lewes Christmas Parade Saturday, Dec. 3, and invites market friends to join them on their entry as it parades down Kings Highway to Second Street. Contact the HLFM at 302-644-1436 or historiclewesfarmersmarket@comcast.net for more information on how to be involved.
The market continues to glean (gather together donated food from vendors) to give to Casa San Francisco's food bank located in Milton, and patrons can help with this. The market urges customers to purchase something fresh from a vendor and bring it to the HLFM table at the market to donate to the food bank.
The HLFM and its customers also want to give the food pantry a little bit extra for the winter, so the market continues its food drive this Saturday. Here are the specific items that the food bank has requested: spaghetti sauce, pasta, peanut butter, jams and jellies, canned fruits/vegetables/soups, boxed cereal, powdered or shelf stable milk, rice, and beans. Honor the HLFM's mission and the health needs of folk who use the food bank by providing healthy foods. These items may also be brought to the HLFM Table at the Market
The market continues to process SNAP (EBT Food Stamps). To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM will match up to $20 with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to go to the SNAP Information tent at the market to redeem the Bonus Bucks incentive.
