No matter your political leanings, no matter who you voted for in the last election cycle, we can all agree that we continue to live in interesting times.
I have friends and business associates who express a feeling of helplessness as they watch our nation churn with the changes that have been brought about by the current administration in Washington. Even if you celebrate these changes, the effects are felt far and wide across our great nation.
I love history.
Having been an English major at university, I can recall many days spent crammed behind a textbook drinking in the lives of great souls who had made a profound impact on our world. There have been times when I asked myself “where are the great souls of today? “
Our cultural heroes have devolved into pseudo-celebrities and snarky memes on social media. I’ve watched the results of social media arguments and staunch ideals rip apart friendships and destroy all manner of respect and decorum among adults.
What can be done to revive the greatness that may lay dormant in all of us?
We can all start by opening our ears to listen and learn rather than listen to reply. We can put down our phones and stand up together with our neighbors in genuine community rather than hide behind self-justified opinions.
We can start by opening and extending our hands in friendship rather than balling up our fists in fits of anger and feelings of unfairness.
We can all become great if we would just embrace a sense of humility and right action.
No matter who sits in any political office, we all have the opportunity to stand upon our stumps and point the way toward a brighter future for our children, our families, our communities, ourselves.
