Picturesque exhibit to open at Peninsula Gallery Sept. 3

August 24, 2016

Peninsula Gallery in Lewes will host Picturesque, a exhibit opening Saturday, Sept 3. The four artists are Doris Ingram, Bill Snow, Jacalyn Beam and Howard Eberle. There will be a reception for the artists from 5 to 7 p.m., Sept. 3. For this exhibit, the artists were asked to paint Lewes, Rehoboth and anything in between, and then say what it was that particularly attracted them to their subject material.

About her beloved Lewes, Ingram says, "Lewes is special. Walkable streets are lined with old houses full of architectural detail and history. Surrounded by water on three sides, you have the great marsh, the bay with its gentle beach and the ocean. Hiking, biking, wading the sandbars and enjoying the bird life while watching sensational sunsets – all this provides me with endless subject material."

Snow, a realist painter from Rehoboth, has a passion for three subjects: the colors of autumn, bodies of water and architecture. "I relish the exuberance of color. Reflections in water are a challenge, and many times a mystery, which I enjoy working out. Finally, I enjoy capturing the play of light and shadow in architectural subjects. My images in this show are centered around Rehoboth and include my three passions in various combinations."

Beam, an impressionist painter, lives in the northern part of the state, but is fortunate enough to have friends living in the local area, and they keep inviting her to stay. She says, "The world is rich with beauty, and it is the optimal way to see the subtleties of light and shadow, atmospheric perspective and real colors. I have painted both the expected and the unexpected. An evening marsh scene off New Road in Lewes and a path through the dunes at Deauville Beach are expected. What you might not expect are a country farm and an autumn tradition of pumpkin picks. The color of red lights in between Lewes and Rehoboth are missing. Instead, find the local colors of trails, pine forests and the simple pleasures of life in Sussex County.”

Eberle recently became a resident of Lewes. He considers himself a portrait painter of objects, rather than people, focusing primarily on the object to the exclusion of everything else. He says, "For this show I chose iconic images that evoke a sense of nostalgia. The shoreline towers and the Breakwater Light that are unique to Cape Henlopen State Park, the Boardwalk of Rehoboth (as it was in the past), a flag flying proudly during the summer holidays and the Dogfish insignia that we have come to see on so many things. A walk on the beach brings treasures from the ocean – starfish, seashells and old floats; the sun rising and setting over water. These are the paintings I wanted to share.”

The Peninsula Gallery is at 520 E. Savannah Road in Lewes, just across the canal bridge. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday thru Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.  To view images from the show, go to www.peninsula-gallery.com. Call 302-645-0551 for further information.
