I am a member of the Lewes Lions Club, and the club has been a longtime supporter of the Lewes Fire Department since our club formed in 1946. In 1954, the Lions Club raised $8,000 to donate to the fire department to buy an ambulance. The Lions Club has given financial awards to the fire department almost yearly since then. Last year, the Lions Club gave them $3,000 on Nov. 11, and we have been working on trying to raise additional funds to help with the purchase of a new 100-foot ladder truck.
A recent article "Lewes Fire Department sounds alarm at budget workshop" indicated that the Lewes Fire Department is the busiest fire department in Sussex County and the fifth busiest in the state (excluding the City of Wilmington). They had 974 fire calls in 2023 and 5,919 EMS calls. The fire department also indicated they send out two mailings per year seeking funding from the public but only receive a 25% return, with an average donation of $83.
There are a lot of fundraisers held in our area every year for many worthy nonprofit organizations, but I believe the Lewes Fire Department should be at the top of all of them. What other local nonprofit organization has the potential impact on everyone in the community? By giving to the Lewes Fire Department, you are helping to protect your home and family, as well as the whole community. Giving to the Lewes Fire Department may help save your life or the life of a family member.
