Police: Lewes man found sleeping on Grotto Pizza property wearing stolen employee shirt

A Lewes man faces charges after police say they found him sleeping at the Lewes Grotto Pizza June 17 wearing an employee shirt even through he didn’t work there.

Delaware State Police say there went to Grotto Pizza on Shady Road at 9:36 a.m. and found Jacob Capozio, 38, sleeping on the ground in a fenced area behind the business, said Sgt. India Sturgis of the Delaware State Police.

Police woke up Capozio, who was wearing a Grotto Pizza polo shirt, which an employee said had been taken from the Grotto store, Sturgis said. An employee verified that Capozio was not an employee, she said.

Video surveillance showed Capozio entering the store and removing merchandise valued at less than $1,500. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to Troop 7 where he was charged with felony third-degree burglary, theft under $1,500, and third-degree criminal trespass. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $4,200 secured bond.
