December 11, 2022

A Delmar man faces charges Dec. 9 after crashing into a car near Long Neck and assaulting the driver.

Steven Shores, 53, was driving westbound on Route 24 near Silicato Drive at 4:54 p.m. when he crashed his Ford E-150 van into the rear of a Land Rover that was stopped in traffic, said Sgt. India Sturgis of the Delaware State Police.

Shores got out of his van and confronted the driver of the Land Rover, a 69-year-old Lewes man, pulling him from the Land Rover and throwing him to the ground, Sturgis said.

Shores returned to his van and fled the scene driving west on Route 24. A short time later, Sturgis said, the van collided with a utility pole after trying to pass a vehicle in a no-passing zone on Route 24 near Gull Point Road. When troopers arrived on the scene, she said, they observed signs that Shores was an impaired driver. He was taken into custody without any further issues. The debris from this collision caused damage to a Honda Accord and a Lexus RX.

The driver of the Land Rover was treated at an area hospital for nonlife-threatening injuries. There were no additional injuries reported as a result of the collisions.

Shores was transported to Troop 7, where he was charged with felony second-degree assault, driving under the influence, and traffic violations.

He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $3,607 secured bond.
