Police Unity Tour rides for those who’ve died

May 24, 2017

The Police Unity Tour rolled through the Cape Region May 10-11. The tour honors law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Three waves, each with hundreds of cyclists, disembarked the Cape May-Lewes Ferry May 10, rode over the Freeman Bridge and to Route 1 hotels for the night. Cyclists continued on to Annapolis the next morning, where they converged with a larger contingent of cyclists and rode to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., where a candlelight vigil was held May 13.

Traditionally, survivors of fallen officers who are riding in the tour are placed at the front of the delegation as it rides the final leg to the national memorial. Lewes resident JuneRose Futcher was among the survivors. Futcher has ridden in the tour the last two years in honor of her grandfather Charles Futcher, the only Lewes policeman to ever have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Following the arrival the Police Unity Tour executive committee presents a check of the grand total of donation to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund executives. The tour raised $2.5 million in 2016. For more information about the tour, go to policeunitytour.com.
