Protection for those delicious Bennett Orchards peaches

March 9, 2022

Those popular Bennett Orchards peaches found at local farmers markets are getting an extra layer of protection. Although whitewashing – painting the trunks of fruit trees – is commonplace in many places across the United States, it’s not something seen every day in Sussex County. The latex paint helps protect the trees’ bark from splitting, which aids in prevention of disease, and incursions by insects and fungus. The white paint also reflects sunlight during the day and keeps the trees warmer at night. Bennett’s farm is located off Route 20 between Dagsboro and Frankford. The farm offers U-pick blueberries, peaches and nectarines in season.
