November 29, 2017

The Rehoboth Beach Gingerbread Contest, set for Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 9-10, at Epworth United Methodist Church, will have gingerbread and much more. The event begins at 11 a.m., Saturday, and concludes at 2 p.m., Sunday.

Activities will include children's crafts, a visit from Santa and a visit by micro miniature horse Silver Wings from Angelic Touch Therapy Animals. Other attractions will include a display of winter- and Christmas-themed quilts on loan from Ocean Waves Quilt Guild, a model train garden, and a café selling apple cider, hot chocolate, freshly baked cookies and hot dogs. For a detailed schedule, go to gingerbreadjoy.org.

The gingerbread competition is divided into amateur and professional categories. Participating professional entrants include: Shelley Lias Maull, owner of the newly opened Little Brick Cakery in Milton; Chef Efrain Martinez of Papa Grande’s, Fenwick Island; Chef Chip Miller of Blackwall Hitch, Rehoboth; and Danielle Panarello, representing Baywood Greens. Panarello is director of operations at Baywood, but her professional history includes pastry chef positions at LaLa Land, The Back Porch Café and Eden. Professional entries will be judged based on overall appearance, originality and creativity, level of difficulty and consistency of theme.

Proceeds will support Epworth's Christmas Joy and Good Sam programs, and the West Rehoboth Children and Youth Program, and will provide aid to homeless students in the Cape Henlopen School District. Funds will be raised from tickets sold for people's choice votes to decide the winning entries in the four amateur divisions: adult, high school, family and nonprofit organization. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Professional entries will be sold by silent auction. Voting and auction will end at 1 p.m., Sunday. Admission is free.

Event sponsors include The Cake Lady, Daria Horn, The Cape Gazette, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Gallo Realty, Edie Bees Confection Shop, Angelic Touch Therapy Animals and Snyder's Candy.
