Rehoboth Beach, Lewes women die in multi-car crash near Red Mill Pond

May 7, 2023

Two women died May 6 - one from Rehoboth Beach, the other from Lewes - following a multi-car crash on Route 1 near Red Mill Pond.

The crash happened at 8:46 a.m. when Mary Elicone, 59, of Rehoboth Beach was driving a white 2019 BMW 540i southbound on Route 1 south of Cave Neck Road, and for unknown reasons, she veered off the right side of the highway and into a drainage ditch, said Sr. Cpl. Leonard DeMalto of the Delaware State Police. Elicone continued southbound in the ditch and struck a stop sign outside the Red Mill Inn before veering back into the southbound lanes and into the grass median, DeMalto said. The BMW then went into the northbound lanes of Route 1 where it ran head-on into a gray 2017 Chevrolet Equinox and a red 2020 Jeep Renegade that were traveling northbound at the time, he said.

Elicone was critically injured and taken to an area hospital by ambulance where she was pronounced dead a short time later, DeMalto said. The driver of the Equinox, Suzanne Misener, 65, of Lewes, was also critically injured and taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

The driver of the Jeep, a 52-year-old woman from Milton, was taken to an area hospital by ambulance for nonlife-threatening injuries. Route 1 northbound was closed for about four hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident and ask anyone who witnessed this collision to contact Master Cpl. K. Argo at 302-703-3264; send a private Facebook message to the Delaware State Police or call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
