Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild class registration due Sept. 18

September 13, 2017

The Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild is offering a class in memoir writing/creative nonfiction, as well as two unique one-session classes in book cover design and the art of perspective/point of view. Registration will end Monday, Sept. 18.

A six-week class, "What's next?” will help students explore where they've been: jobs, family, motherhood/fatherhood, reflections on the past, and what happens next in retirement, widowhood, grandmother- or fatherhood, travel, new adventures, and new careers. It will be taught by award-winning essayist Judy Catterton from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Thursdays, Sept. 21-Nov. 2, in Catterton's Kings Creek home in Rehoboth Beach. Participants will write essays that incorporate literary techniques of dialogue, scene building and research. They will explore ways to make true stories compelling while also discussing underlying themes that can help turn pleasant anecdotes into evocative essays. The cost is $270 for guild members and $300 for nonmembers.

Eight Elements for Great Book Cover Design will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 23. Writer and graphic artist Crystal Heidel will walk writers through the essential elements of cover design that all writers should understand when thinking about the best covers for their particular book. Heidel has designed book covers for a number of authors. Whether writers plan to design their own cover, work with an artist friend or hire a designer, her tips and tools - dealing with everything from why the author's name should not be larger than the title, to color choices, use of image and font style - will allow writers, especially those considering self-publishing, to package, showcase and market their books in the most compelling way. The cost is $55 for guild members and $65 for nonmembers.

Maribeth Fischer will offer a class on the Art of Perspective and Point of View in writing from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 30. Fischer says too many writers think point of view is a matter of choosing first, second, third or omniscient perspectives, or choosing which character will tell the story. Point of view is so much more, and there are dozens of crucial choices to make that will affect everything from what is described to how it's described to the words used. It is woven through all the elements of writing and often is the difference between adequate writing and fantastic writing. The cost is $55 for guild members and $65 for nonmembers.

The Saturday classes will take place in the Lutheran Church of Our Savior (behind Big Fish Grill) on Bay Vista Road in Rehoboth. For details or to register for classes, email fischer.maribeth@gmail.com. For more information, go to www.rehobothbeachwritersguild.com.
