Rehoboth Elementary students present geography projects

December 22, 2016

Donna Gibson's second-grade class at Rehoboth Elementary School has been studying United States geography this semester. A new teacher to the Cape District, Gibson chose to focus on this subject matter because some of her students thought they lived in a state called Rehoboth Beach. "After the responses that I received when I asked my students if they knew what state we lived in, I immediately realized this project was going to be worthwhile to our second-graders," she said.

To gain a deep understanding of U.S. geography, each student had a state to research. The students researched each state’s location, symbols and fun facts. Gibson says, “We didn't stop there. In order to make the lesson memorable, fun, colorful and entertaining, my students were given the opportunity to dress up as something that may represent their state and/or serve a sample of something that represents their state. We invited parents in to listen to our presentations. You'll notice in one of the photos, good ol’ Delaware is represented, and of course the student served, what else...scrapple!"

The kids had an amazing time completing this project, and they learned how to research, take notes, organize their findings and communicate what they learned with parents, peers and teachers. The entire project met many Common Core standards for geography, English language arts literacy and technology.
